A scratcher does not have to be beige. This one is a clean rectangle of corrugated cardboard, 44 cm long, wrapped along both long sides in a neon pink and magenta checkerboard with a small yellow zeze badge at the centre, and finished in pale sky blue across each end. Left out on the floor it reads as a graphic object rather than as pet kit, which is rather the point of it.
The scratching surface is the exposed edge of the corrugated board itself, a dense field of open flutes running the full length of the pad.
